About The Movement Specialist

About Marie-Claire

I have worked in the health, fitness and rehabilitation industry since 1998, building a career that combines movement, education and evidence-based rehabilitation. Over the years I have worked across many disciplines, including gym instruction, personal training, swimming coaching, aqua aerobics, sports massage, Pilates and yoga.

After qualifying with the London School of Sports Massage, I established a sports therapy clinic within an osteopathic practice in 2001 before completing my Pilates teacher training with the Body Control Pilates Association.

Following my Sports Science degree in 2003, I opened my first Pilates and Fitness Studio, offering Pilates classes, personal training and sports therapy. In 2008, I joined Fitness Inspired Teacher Training, where I wrote and delivered the Level 3 Pilates Teacher Training qualification alongside a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses until 2016.

Throughout my career, I have worked with clients of all ages and abilities, supporting rehabilitation following knee, shoulder and spinal surgery, as well as helping people living with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, chronic pain conditions and age-related mobility challenges. I have also worked extensively with dancers, athletes and those simply looking to move more confidently and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

As demand grew, Marie-Claire Pilates Studios expanded in 2011 into larger premises with three dedicated studios: an Apparatus Pilates Studio, a Mat Pilates Studio and a Yoga Studio. During this period I returned to one of my earliest passions by qualifying as a yoga teacher before progressing to tutor the FiTT Yoga qualification.

Between 2009 and 2011, I was honoured to serve as a guest lecturer on the Biomechanics pathway of the Sports Science degree at the University of Chichester. In 2012, I was invited to work in the United States alongside teachers trained by the legendary Romana Kryzanowska, one of Joseph Pilates’ closest protégés.

In 2014, my own life took an unexpected turn when I fractured my spine in an accident, leaving me with persistent chronic pain. Through a combination of rehabilitation, movement science and patience, I was able to restore my own strength, mobility and confidence, eventually becoming completely pain free. That experience fundamentally shaped the way I work today.

As a Movement Specialist, I understand that rehabilitation is about far more than exercises alone. It is about helping people rebuild trust in their bodies, regain confidence and return to the activities they love. Whether someone is recovering from injury, managing a long-term condition or simply wanting to move better, my approach is always individual, strategic and compassionate.

Alongside my clinical work, I provide bespoke training for health and fitness professionals, mentor teachers and therapists, and support students as they develop their own careers within the industry.

I am also the author of two books:

  • Opposition in Pilates and Yoga (2016)
  • MOVE Away From Pain (2020)

Following the pandemic, our group classes have been based at The Chapel in Royal Victoria Country Park. While the building undergoes essential restoration work, classes are temporarily being held across several local venues. Please visit our Venues link on the Classes page for the latest locations.

Alongside my clinical work, I hold a Master’s degree in Education from The Open University. My research into successful transitions for learners in Alternative Provision has strengthened my understanding of individualised learning, motivation and behaviour change—principles that underpin my teaching, mentoring and rehabilitation practice today.

After almost three decades in the industry, I still believe that movement has the power to change lives. Whether I’m helping someone recover from pain, guiding a Pilates teacher through their qualification, or supporting a child to achieve their potential, my aim is always the same: to help people move forward with confidence.

If you’re unsure whether we can help, I’d be delighted to have a chat. Please get in touch and we’ll discuss how we can support you on your movement journey.

Big respect for Marie-Claire, her knowledgeable teacher training, the course was great….. it has given me some really useful extras to incorporate into each of the various levels of classes I teach. Tracey, Mini Balls Course
